Upgrading from Shimano E8000?

The DU-EP800 is Shimano's next-generation EP8 upgrade path from the earlier DU-E8000 platform. Compared with E8000, EP800 delivers more torque, lower weight, reduced pedaling drag, and Shimano's newer SD300 communication architecture.

• More torque: 85Nm vs. 70Nm for DU-E8000
• Lighter: approximately 2.6 kg, about 300 g lighter than the previous generation
• Reduced pedaling drag: Shimano reports a further 36% reduction compared with the previous generation
• Newer electrical architecture: EP800 uses Shimano SD300 communication
• Legacy component support: certain SD50 components can be integrated with the Shimano EW-AD305 adapter where supported

E8000 to EP800 Installation Considerations

Granite Bike Works has successfully completed DU-E8000 to DU-EP800 conversions on our own bikes, including a YT Decoy. We have also seen many successful conversions documented by other riders.

• Motor housing clearance: EP800 does not have one of the clearance notches found between the DU-E8000 mounting points. Some bikes use this area as a cable channel.
• Modification may be required: On some bikes, including certain YT Decoy installations, additional motor-housing clearance may be required. Other frames may not need this modification.
• Warranty: Physically modifying or notching the drive-unit housing may void the motor manufacturer's warranty.
• Lower motor cover: The original cover or skid plate may not fully match the EP800 housing. A different cover, filler panel, or custom solution may be required.
• Electrical system: Wiring, speed sensor, display, switches, battery system, firmware, and any required Shimano adapters must be verified for the specific bike.

Compatibility

Designed for Shimano EP8 DU-EP800 applications and supported E8000-to-EP800 upgrade installations. An E8000-to-EP800 conversion should not be treated as universally plug-and-play. Frame clearance, cable routing, covers, battery integration, wiring, sensors, displays, switches, adapters, and firmware can vary by bike and model year.

Not compatible with DU-EP801 systems as a direct replacement.
